Reviews for the lens have shown that the 27 mkii isn't better image wise it's the same kens but with a aperture ring.

(And besides, it's not like the 35mm is a big lens by any means.)

A lens being really small doesn't mean much if you dislike the way that images look with that field of view. The rest is just personal preference - to which again I would say that focal length is the most important thing. The old version also doesn't have an aperture ring (so you have to set the aperture in the camera settings instead of on the lens) and it doesn't have weather sealing (which doesn't matter too much because neither does your camera body) BUT the new version coming out soon does include both of those things, but it is a bit more expensive because it is new. You literally have to be purposefully looking at it when shooting a brick wall and zooming to 300% If you shoot wide open and pixel peep the outermost corners of the frame there are areas where it's SLIGHTLY less sharp, but in 99% of cases this doesn't matter a single bit. (There's more or a difference between F2 and F2.8 than you might realise.) This makes it a worse lens for low light performance and/or fast moving subjects. The thing that's lost is a few stops of light when wide open. On a side note: Right now i have fallen in love with the 50mm f2 ) even if it is narrower, it fits me for the way i shoot ) To boil it down i think the major difference are the size, the lack of an aperture ring on the 27mm and weather resistance. For image quality it seems also good, but as i don't own the lens, i can only base my opinion on published shots.Īs always it comes down to your preferences. Focal length wise there is not a huge difference in my opinion, 27mm makes your shot a little wider, might be useful for some situations on the street if you need a wider angle and can't back up. The old 27 mm does not have an aperture ring (a feature i love on lenses). It is less fast (f2.8), but much smaller (although to me the 35 f2 is already small), with the 27mm you can slip the camera even in a coat pocket, on the street you can be very stealthy with such a small lens. On top it is weather resistant (to be honest i don't need that, but i may be good to have). All i can say that for now most of my favourite shots were taken with this lens. Image quality wise it's great, very sharp (even at f2), but i am not a pixel peeper. With f2 i like the capability in low light. I like the focal length, you can shoot almost everything with it(street, portraits. The image quality seems to be the same which is saying a lot because I've worked with a lot of good glass in my long career and thing the FujiX 35mm1.4 is possibly optically the best I've ever used but have to give part of the kudos to the XPRO1 sensor/processor.I just own the XF 35mm f2. The 27 surprisingly works well for portraits and the 2.8 hasn't actually been a problem even though I was pretty sure it would be. I have both and prefer the 35 for street and for travel would take the 27, it's the perfect length between two of my favorites the 23 and 35.
